With a Master of Social Work from Portland State University, certified as a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and an extensive public health background, Katherine Calvert possesses a wealth of experience, training and education. Katherine has an innate ability to relate to people, to break down communication barriers, and to lead people to a more fulfilling life by teaching them to respond differently to challenging situations.

During her many years in the profession, she has built on her experiences of combating drug and alcohol abuse in schools, specializing in building resiliency in school-age children, and is continuing to study recent research in neurobiology and early childhood development. She is also connected to a widespread network of counselors and other wellness providers in the community, giving her patients access to an extensive community of health practitioners.

Katherine is trained in DBT (Dialectic Behavior Therapy), a psychotherapy developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. and designed to teach specific skills to effectively and mindfully respond in the moment and “build a life worth living.” Katherine also treats survivors of trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. designed to treat trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

She counsels couples using Imago Therapy, developed by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., an approach that seeks to understand the root cause of conflict, typically found in childhood experiences. This can only be accomplished in a safe environment, which suspends destructive patterns and helps people re-discover the potential within their relationship.

Katherine’s training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, developed by Pat Ogden, Ph.D., helps Katherine to integrate the body’s understanding of our life experiences and incorporates these body-based practices in both her individual and couples-based counseling.

Katherine considers herself a personal emotional trainer. Her skills-based approach has proven particularly effective for men and women who struggle with communicating their needs and wants and fear of being judged or criticized.
